How to use Art Masking Fluid

Step 1

Masking Fluid is used to temporarily mask and preserve the paper when applying colour, as it prevents the paint adhering to the paper. It’s especially useful for fine details.

Step 2

Before using Art Masking Fluid, coat your brush with a lather of soap. This protects the bristles and makes cleaning easier later.

Step 3

Apply the masking fluid directly to the areas you want to protect. Be sure the paper is completely dry, applying it to damp or wet paper can damage the surface.

Step 4

Allow the masking fluid to dry fully before painting. This ensures it forms a proper barrier and keeps the masked areas intact. Once dry, paint over the masked areas as part of your composition.

Step 5

When the painted sections are completely dry, gently rub away the masking fluid with your finger to reveal the clean, preserved surface beneath.

Step 6

Art Masking Fluid has a yellow tint, making it easier to spot for removal. If you prefer something less visible or are working with delicate papers, opt for Colourless Art Masking Fluid (right), which avoids staining.
