How to draw a manga character with the Winsor & Newton Mixed Media Manga set

The artist

Dani Paz

I’m Dani, a self-taught manga artist.
My mother says illustration runs in the family, she, my sister, and my grandfather are all artistic. It was in the 90s, when the Dragon Ball series came out, by Akira Toriyama, that a passion for manga awoke in me. I’m inspired by other artists but what motivates me the most is seeing a drawing come to life because each time it is unique. This particular drawing was inspired by my kids, Leo and Emma.

Step 1

First I sketch a circle and lines to determine where the different parts of the character will go.

Step 2

Then I start drawing the character in more detail, allowing the lines to guide me. Here I used the graphite pencil from Winsor & Newton.

Step 3

Then I use the W&N black fineliner 0.5mm to outline. This is a very important step, as it takes a lot of concentration to avoid mistakes that are harder to correct.

Step 4

I used Promarker Sandstone for the skin. Using the same colour, you can create different shades using the same promarker going over it multple times.

Step 5

For the eyes I used Promarker True Blue, and I will apply the promarker brush blender to create a gradient of colour. The result is fantastic only using only one colour.

Step 6

For the details on the jacket, I used Promarker Lipstick red, Yellow, True Blue, Blush and Promarker Brush Black. The results have been rewarding and I've loved using these colours.
