How to Paint a Geometric Quadrictomy

Mix CMYK process colours for vibrant, precise hues. Master colour theory through this dynamic shape study.

Step 1

On a canvas board, mark out a square divided into a 7x7 grid. Tape out three vertical lines with masking tape and seal edge of tape with Matt Medium. Paint two magenta and one yellow.

Step 2

When dry, remove tape. Remember to use Flow Improver with water when mixing paint and to seal tape with Matt Medium.

Step 3

Tape horizontal lines to paint two blue bands and one yellow. Overlapping colours will create secondary colours green, orange and purple. Remove tape to reveal empty squares.

Step 4

Mix secondary colours green, orange and purple and fill remaining empty squares.

Step 5

Tape half of the outer perimeter squares and the 5x5 square grid in the centre, leaving the centre square unmasked. Paint the perimeter in purple and the central square in white.

Step 6

Once paint is dry, remove the tape to reveal a drop shadow effect with a luminous central area in this grid.
