How to Paint a Subtle Desert Landscape

Blend soft pastels and collage for a textured desert scene. Discover depth with gentle tones and layered detail.

Step 1

Using our Acrylic paper, paint a band of Galeria Pale Terracotta with a one stroke/wash 1” brush just below the horizon. Dilute colour with Matt Medium and a little water.

Step 2

Repeat process with Galeria Pale Lemon above the Pale Terracotta. Use horizontal lateral brushstrokes blending colours gradually to create a background gradient.

Step 3

Apply Galeria Powder Blue to the top section to suggest the sky and gradually blend into the Galeria Pale Lemon.

Step 4

Use Galeria Pale Olive for the lower ground. Blend colours while bands are still wet. For smoother blends use Galeria Fluid Retarder with the paint.

Step 5

Draw cactus and sun with pencil outline on a separate sheet of paper. Cut around outline and paint cactus body with Galeria Pale Olive using a Round Brush (nº 8).

Step 6

Paint cactus base with Pale Lemon and shadows (Pale Lemon, Pale Terracotta and Mars Black). Finish cactus with dark-green details and sun with Pale Lemon and Pale Terracotta highlights. Once dry, glue to background with Matt Medium.
